I purchased the Turin Bailey’s Chocolates at my local Riteaid drug store after seeing them on the shelf. I absolutely adore Bailey’s and so I drew the conclusion that this was a chocolate that I had to taste. As it happens I have not yet reviewed any of Turin Chocolatier’s chocolate so this also gave me the opportunity to do so.
The Chocolate: Turin Bailey’s Chocolates
Type of Chocolate: Milk Chocolate
Cocoa Content: Unlisted
Best Eaten: As a dessert
Price: $3.99 for a 4.2 oz box
The Turin Bailey’s Chocolates caught my eye initially because of the inclusion of Bailey’s name in the chocolate, however, I was also anxious to try out a chocolate that included Mexican cocoa beans.
Taste:
The Turin Bailey’s Chocolates come wrapped inside a gold foil inside a beautifully decorated wrapper which is packaged neatly inside a cardboard pouch. Upon opening the pouch and freeing the generous portion of wrapped chocolates from the cellophane wrapper which prevents the chocolates from getting loose the aroma of Bailey’s was already running rampant. Such a strong scent of such a pleasant ingredient had my mouth watering before I had even set eyes on the chocolate itself. Upon unwrapping a single chocolate the scent of Bailey’s is even stronger and completely overpowers any trace of chocolate.
As I take my first bite of the Turin Bailey’s Chocolates the chocolate shell softly crunches under my teeth and the softer chocolate is overtaken by the flavor of Bailey’s. There is a distinct lack of liqueur to the Bailey’s, however, and this lack of alcoholic ‘burn’ while making the chocolate safe for minors does tend to take something away from the Bailey’s experience for those of us of legal drinking age. As with the scent of this chocolate the Bailey’s flavored ganache tends to take away any taste from the chocolate itself but this is to be expected with any liqueur filled or liqueur flavored chocolate combination. The slightly harder chocolate shell quickly melts in to a softer chocolate and ganache combination and turns in to a much more creamy textured concoction which maintains the slightly disappointing and mild Bailey’s flavor. The chocolate texture prior to melting is nothing particularly special and has a faint graininess to it although this dissipates quickly once in the mouth.
The after taste of the Turin Bailey’s Chocolates is a soft Bailey’s flavor which is sweet but not overly so.
Ingredients:
The ingredients in the Turin Bailey’s Chocolates include: milk chocolate (sugar, dry whole milk, cocoa butter, cocoa paste, soy lecithin as emulsifier and artificial vanilla flavor), filling (sugar, Bailey’s Original Irish Cream Liqueur flavor ingredient, dry whole milk, cocoa butter, vegetable shortening, glucose syrup, titanium dioxide, preservatives [potassium sorbate, sodium propionate], soy lecithin as emulsifier, xanthan gum, sorbitan monostearate as emulsifier and artificial vanilla flavor, citric acid and salt).
The Bottom Line:
The Turin Bailey’s Chocolates are nothing special and if anything carry the disappointment of a lack of any significant alcohol content as well as any bold chocolate flavor to make up for this lack. While this may serve well for the “friend’s over to watch a movie and have dinner” type of evening it would most definitely not be something to pick for an “impress the new neighbors or inlaws” type of evening.
