I purchased Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins from my local health food supermarket. I have always had a particular penchant for anything that combines fruit and chocolate so when I saw these I had to give them a shot and see how the organic version of rasinets stood up to the original not-quite-so-good-for-you version.
The Chocolate: Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins
Type of Chocolate: Dark Chocolate
Cocoa Content: N/A
Best Eaten: As a snack
Price: $2.29
I have never been particularly discerning about the organic nature of my chocolate choices and after trying a few different organic and dietary limited chocolate brands I can honestly say that I have no real opinion one way or the other because much like regular chocolates the flavor depends on the individual bar and not the dietary restrictions placed on it.
Taste:
The Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins come in a small purple packet with a little window so I could actually see what I was buying before I bought it. The individual raisins look plump and vary in size but are generally the size of a coffee bean. Upon opening the bag the scent was very much that of a dull dark chocolate that lacked the artificial sweetness of other chocolate covered fruits.
Taking a few of the Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins in to my mouth the first thing that I notice is the texture. There is a definite graininess to these chocolate raisins that is lacking in their more artificial sibling. The graininess resembles the sugared hardened raisins that clump together in a raisin packet after they have been sitting on the shelf for too long. The individual raisins are also rather less plump than advertised on the packaging, there is no plump or juicy factor at all in fact and chewing the Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins is much like eating a handful of dried raisins coating in a bland dark chocolate. The chocolate is particularly bland and the only upside to this is the ability to taste the robust raisin flavor through the chocolate coating. The chocolate does melt rather quickly, however, it retains a waxy and slick texture and easily parts from the raisin creating a oil and water type of combination once on the tongue.
The aftertaste of the Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins is an almost fermented fruit taste which comes from the raisins and there is a very slight flavor of dark chocolate that follows.
Ingredients:
The ingredients in the Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins include: organic dark chocolate (organic sugar, organic cocoa paste, organic cocoa butter, soy lecithin [a non-GMO emulsifier], organic vanilla), organic raisins, organic tapioca dextrin, orange dewaxed unbleached glaze.
The Bottom Line:
The Sunspire Organic Dark Chocolate Raisins make a great fake treat for moms to give to their children when they are trying to encourage organic living and lower sugar consumption but as far as a tasty treat goes these are definitely not it. There is a certain something lacking in this treat that could, perhaps, be replaced with a little more plumpness to the raisins but as they stand they are good for healthy snacks but only if you aren’t looking for much as far as taste is concerned.
