I purchased the Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry from my local health food super market. I admit to being an animal lover and the presence of a cute furry face on any product can sway me in to a purchase that I never intended on in a heartbeat but this time the product happened to be chocolate. I couldn’t just leave this cute furry guy in the chocolate aisle not when he boasted organic dark chocolate and cherries.

The Chocolate: Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry

Type of Chocolate: Dark Chocolate

Cocoa Content: 70%

Best Eaten: Alone

Price: $1.89

It is rare that I find a particularly dark chocolate with a waxy texture that I enjoy but this particular bar has something special that just lures me in.

Taste:

The Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry bar comes in a thick paper wrapper with a silver foil inlay. The paper wrapper boasts support of the community and ethical practices while the interior of the wrapper reiterates the importance of ethical trading and conservation. The inside of the wrapper also features a few facts about the gorgeous koala bear featured on the front of the wrapper including the fact that when baby koalas are born they are only the size of a jellybean! Upon opening the chocolate bar the scent is almost seductive, a deep dark cocoa highlighted with the fruitiness of cherry that is enough to make any chocolate lovers mouth water.

My first bite of the Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry leaves me torn, I dislike the hard cold texture to the bar but the flavor is so fragrant and penetrating that I barely pause before taking a second bite. The dark chocolate resonates with an earthy tone and yet holds the bold cherry flavor well integrating the two very distinct flavors in to one delicious combination. The waxy feel of the dark chocolate itself is almost enough to distract from the pleasant flavor but not quite and as I continue to eat the large square I have broken off I find myself more able to overlook the textural flaws due to the boldness of flavor. After swallowing a small piece of the Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry I find that the earthy-fruity flavor gives way to a robust and almost alcoholic aftertaste. A deep and resonating flavor which carries with it a slight graininess.

The aftertaste of the Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry is a little less fruity but maintains a pleasant dark cocoa flavor spotted with grittiness.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in the Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry include: organic dark chocolate (organic chocolate liquor, organic sugar, organic cocoa butter, organic cocoa powder, organic soy lecithin [as an emulsifier], and organic vanilla), natural black cherry flavor (medium chain triglycerides, natural flavor).

The Bottom Line:

The Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry is not the most pleasing chocolate bar when it comes to chocolate, it maintains a cold and waxy texture and leaves a grainy residue which tends to lead to cotton mouth but it is a particularly pleasing combination of flavor. With such a bold and delightful flavor combination highlighted by the all organic nature of the product and topped with the fact that 10% of profits are donated to charity…well you have a winner in my book.

Overall Rating:

You can purchase Endangered Species Premium Smooth Organic Dark Chocolate with Cherry from your local health food grocery store or through Amazon.com.

I purchased the Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups from my local health food super market. I picked up these cups because I rarely see caramel cups rather than peanut butter cups. I am rather fond of caramel and milk chocolate so I just couldn’t resist this three cup pack of Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups.

The Chocolate: Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups

Type of Chocolate: Milk Chocolate

Cocoa Content: Unlisted

Best Eaten: As a treat

Price: $1.89

The Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups is a nice change from the more traditional peanut butter cups and just one of the varieties of Newmans Own cups that I would like to try.

Taste:

The Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups come in a long pack and the three cups are held inside a brown plastic mold to prevent shifting or crushing during shipment. The wrapper boasts USDA organic certification as well as Rainforest Alliance certification and the Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation stamp of approval. The initial scent of the Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups is a mild milk chocolate, there is very little richness to the scent at all.

My first bite of the Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups is slightly disappointing. The chocolate is thick and crunches but the caramel itself is particularly thin and extremely buttery with a hint of salt. There is very little sweetness to the caramel filling. The chocolate is rather flavorless and has a distinct dull and artificial texture which I find ironic in this particular organic treat. The caramel seems to dissipate rather quickly as there is such an insignificant amount of it within each cup and once gone it leaves behind a chunk of rather flavorless and boring milk chocolate. There is nothing particularly satisfying about this snack and is does not even slightly resemble the image on the packaging.

The aftertaste of the Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups is a bland milk chocolate with no tone of caramel.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in the Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups include: Organic Milk Chocolate (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter*, Organic Whole Milk Powder, Organic Chocolate Liquor*, Organic Soy Lecithin [an emulsifier], Organic Vanilla), Organic Liquid Caramel (Organic Corn Syrup, Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Nonfat Milk, Organic Heavy Cream, Organic Butter (Cream, Salt), Salt, Sodium Citrate, Organic Vanilla Extract, Organic Soy Lecithin [an emulsifier], Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols [added to preserve freshness]).

The Bottom Line:

The Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups may be organic but it is not particularly flavorful or full of promise. There is little to no flavor to desire out of this product and the texture is not a pleasant one either.

Overall Rating:

You can purchase Newmans Own Organic Milk Chocolate Caramel Cups from your local health food grocery store or through Amazon.com.
