Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar Review

by Amy on August 25, 2010 in Chocolate Reviews,Dark Chocolate

I found the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar at my local health food grocery store. I have seen the Dagoba chocolate brand before in my local chocolate specialty shop but usually pass it up due to its larger price tag but seeing the superfruit variety I couldn’t resist giving it a try!

The Chocolate: Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar

Type of Chocolate: Dark chocolate

Cocoa Content: 74%

Best Eaten: Alone

Price: $4.89

The Dagoba chocolate bars tend to vary in price depending upon where they are purchased. In my area they average for over $4 a piece, however, online they sell for less than that.

Taste:

The Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar comes wrapped in a thick purple paper wrapper with the earthy Dagoba logo on the front. Within the thick paper wrapper is a thin silver foil encasing the chocolate. The initial scent of the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar is one of deep and dark chocolate with a slight hint of fruit.

As I take my first bite of the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar my initial impression is that of the sharp bitterness of the dark chocolate. My first bite also manages to catch a berry of some sort but being that the bar contains acai berries, currants and goji berries I find it hard distinguishing which berry I take with each bite. The berries offer a slight sweetness but considerably more acidity to create a much more bitter chocolate experience. I find it hard to distinguish any of the fruit highlights that I smelled in the chocolate, instead I feels that my palate is washed completely by a bitterness I would compare to biting in to a coffee bean. After swallowing a small amount of chocolate I notice the incredible dryness within my mouth as a result of biting in to one of the berries. The dryness leaves me with cotton mouth and my tongue is completely dried out. Over all the flavor and texture both are rather unpleasant. I have no doubt that the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar offers a high level of anti-oxidants, however, they come at the expense of taste with this bar.

The aftertaste of the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar brings the fruitiness that I originally smelled in the bar but it also brings a severe dry mouth.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar include: organic dark choclate (cacao beans, cane sugar, cocoa, cacao butter, non-gmo soy lecithin) currants, goji berries, acai powder, milk (less than 0.1%).

The Bottom Line:

The Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar may be more of a hit with coffee lovers and lovers of bitter fruits like grapefruit; however, I find the acidity in this bar to be too much. While the fruitiness does present in the aftertaste it is completely destroyed by the feeling of cotton mouth that accompanies it. Overall I would not recommend this to any chocolate lover who loves chocolate for its taste rather than its anti-oxidant properties.

Overall Rating:

You can purchase the Dagoba Organic Chocolate Superfruit Bar from your local grocery store or your local health food store or through their online website.
