Dark Chocolate

I took a little shopping spree to my local health food store a few weekends ago and ended up coming away with some rather delicious organic or allergy friendly chocolate. The Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar was one of the bars that I picked up being that I love both dark chocolate and mint I thought I’d give it a whirl.

The Chocolate: Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar

Type of Chocolate: Dark Chocolate

Cocoa Content: Unlisted

Best Eaten: With a dark roast coffee

Price: $2.49/bar

The Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar held more promise in it’s wrapper than it did in the actual chocolate itself which was rather disappointing.

Taste:

The Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar comes wrapped in a thin gold foil which is, in turn, wrapped in a colorful paper sleeve which boasts dairy and gluten free qualities. The initial scent of the Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar is a somewhat bitter and dark chocolate scent. There is very little trace of sugar or milk in the scent of this bar.

My first bite of the Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar yields a hard dark chocolate with a significantly earthy flavor. There is a slight bitter cocoa flavor, however, it tends to be overshadowed by the earthiness. As I bite each section of the triangular scored bar I find small pieces of mint flavored candy which has a texture which are toffee like in texture. The flavor of the small mint pieces, however, is diminished by the overpowering earthiness of the dark chocolate itself. The texture of the bar is surprisingly creamy for a dairy free chocolate and it lacks the unpleasant milky aftertaste that follows many dairy rich chocolate bars. The mint flavor of the bar, while absent in the initial taste experience makes a lighter encore in the aftertaste of this chocolate bar.

The aftertaste of the Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar is a light mint flavor with a touch of deep earthy chocolate flavor.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in the Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar include: Evaporated cane juice, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, roasted soy flour, glucose syrup, soy lecithin (emulsifier), pure vanilla extract, peppermint oil.

The Bottom Line:

The Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar isn’t an unpleasant taste experience; however, it is somewhat disappointing with the lack of true mint flavor. The texture is neither pleasing nor displeasing; however, I have a dislike for toffee pieces being packed in my teeth and since the mint flavored pieces resemble toffee in texture they do leave teeth jam packed full of candy. Over all this is a valid option if you are looking for a dark chocolate that is vegan friendly, dairy free, gluten free and kosher however, if you are simply a mint chocolate lover like me then you are going to be disappointed with the Sunspire Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar.

Overall Rating:

These past few days I have been sharing with you the very first aerated chocolate in the United States : Bubble Chocolate. While Bubble Chocolate was not exactly what I expected with my preconceived notion of aerated chocolate in England and Europe there is still something particularly enjoyable in the texture of this new product.

Bubble Chocolate is currently available in dark and milk chocolate varieties and can be purchased at these retailers or can be found on the Bubble Chocolate website store.
