Figamajigs Review

by Amy on October 6, 2010 in Chocolate Reviews,Dark Chocolate

I found Figamajigs at my usual local specialty chocolate shop. I can’t honestly tell you why I picked this overly colorful bag up off the shelf because to be honest I don’t care for figs and never really have. Whether it was the brightly striped packaging or the “All Natural,” “Low Fat,” “Good Source of Fiber,” or “High in Anti-Oxidants” that got me to give these small candies a try I don’t know but I have to say that I’m really glad that I did!

The Chocolate: Figamajigs Dark Chocolate Covered Fig  Candy
Type of Chocolate: Dark chocolate covered fig
Cocoa Content:
Unlisted
Best Eaten With:
As a mid-day snack or with a cold glass of milk
Price:
$1.89

Figamajigs are of particular interest to me because I am not a fan of figs and yet I found the flavor rather appealing. I also found the small snack sized bag to be great value for my money and a filling snack.

Taste:

The Figamajigs company makes a small variety of fig based products but the product I picked to review was the small bag of dark chocolate covered fig candy. The bag is brightly colored and holds just 1.41oz of small dark chocolate covered fig pieces which, while it doesn’t seem that much, is surprisingly filling and satisfying.

When I opened the bag of Figamajigs I could smell the dark chocolate, a thick deep scent that carried a lingering sweetness unlike many dark chocolates. I didn’t catch any sharpness or bitterness from the chocolate scent at all. Upon biting in to the small smooth piece of candy I fully expected a Raisinette taste because the texture was very similar. The dark chocolate broke just as Raisinettes do when they are bitten in to and yet as I chewed there came no sweetness, there came an almost alcoholic taste. Being English, I liken it to biting in to a dark chocolate covered bite of Christmas cake. There is a real liquor type quality to these fruit filled pieces. The flavor is unique and not at all what I expected. Each piece carried the flavor of a mature snack, something that appeals to the older palate that can identify the undertone of fig without the hysterics that occur when realizing that there is, in fact, fig in it. The slight alcoholic taste to these pieces I compare to a warming sip of brandy paired with a milky tint of dark chocolate.

The after taste of Figamajigs is that of fig, there is very little remnants of the dark chocolate which coated the tiny morsels.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in Figamajigs include: Figs, dark chocolate (sugar, chocolate liquor processed with potassium carbonate, cocoa butter, butter, oil,) coy lecithin, pure vanilla, cocoa, sugar, rice flour, invert sugar, natural flavor, cream of tartar, canola oil, salt.

The Bottom Line:

As I stated above, I don’t care for figs and despite this fact I found myself consuming an entire bag of these chocolate covered fig morsels in the time it took me to write the first half of this review. The pungent alcoholic warmth warmed my mouth and the fiber filled snack made sure that I felt full after finishing the snack sized bag. I am completely and utterly blown away by these tasty (and healthy) treats. The only thing I didn’t particularly like was those fig seeds which lodge themselves firmly in your teeth!

Overall Rating:

You can buy Figamajigs from their online store or you can find a local carrier of Figamajigs at your local store using the store locator here.

Moonstruck Ivory ChocolateI found the Moonstruck Chocolatier Ivory Chocolate Bar at my local specialty chocolate store and was simply thrilled to find a big name white chocolate. I am a huge fan of white chocolate – whether you choose to classify it as chocolate or not the fact remains that it is a delicious version of a delightful treat. Moonstruck Chocolatier’s white chocolate bar was no exception to the rule either and while the criterion for determining a ‘good’ white chocolate may differ in the distinct lack of earthy cacao bean flavor the fact remains that there is variety within the white chocolate market.

The Chocolate: Moonstruck Chocolatier Ivory Chocolate Bar
Type of Chocolate: White Chocolate
Cocoa Content:
N/A
Best Eaten With:
Shaved atop a simple dessert or alcoholic beverage
Price:
$4.00

Made by a very popular Oregon based chocolate manufacturer the Moonstruck Ivory Chocolate Bar is an indulgent white chocolate which contains a simple list of ingredients and is sure to satisfy even the sweetest tooth with one fourth the recommended serving size.

Taste:

The Moonstruck Chocolatier Ivory Chocolate Bar comes securely wrapped within the traditional Moonstruck packaging, a rather plain paper wrapper featuring the Moonstruck logo, protecting the delicious contents within a delightful foil wrapper. The plain appearance of the packaging serves to make Moonstruck’s brand stand out in a crowd of over printed, over selling packaging techniques being used by competitors in the chocolate market.

Upon opening the packet of chocolate the smell is subtle and sweet and certainly a welcome hiatus from the heavy earthen scents of the dark chocolates I have been sampling lately. The sweetness is detectable with the first sumptuous bite of chocolate as the warm milky treat simply melts on your tongue. The warmth of this chocolate is surprising as many chocolates present with a harder cooler texture, Moonstruck’s Ivory Chocolate Bar is soothing and truly allows for complete enjoyment of the chocolate experience. The milkiness of this chocolate resonates long after one of the rather large pieces has been consumed and the sweet vanilla aftertaste is particularly pleasing as well as filling. While the packaging recommends one entire bar as one single serving, I can quite honestly say that even as a chocoholic one quarter of this bar is more than enough to calm even the biggest chocoholic’s white chocolate cravings.

The after taste of this bar is sweet. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it is sickly sweet but it does leave a clean sweetness in the mouth which I would compliment with a mousse or even a chocolate martini.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in the Moonstruck Chocolatier Ivory Chocolate Bar include: Ivory chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, dry whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder, soy lecithin [ an emulsifier], vanilla.)

The Bottom Line:

This chocolate is one of my particular favorite white chocolate bars, not only because of the subtle flavor and the ability to feel satisfied after only one fourth of the recommended serving size but also because of the quality of the chocolate. Moonstruck Chocolatier’s Ivory Chocolate Bar is a warm chocolate with a satisfying flavor and a noticeable quality of ingredients and for the price it is definitely worth trying for any white chocolate craver.

Overall Rating: Four and a Half Cacao Pods

You can buy Moonstruck Chocolatier products from from your local retailer which can be found here.

Amacado Premium Dark Chocolate Review September 28, 2010

I found Amacado Premium Dark Chocolate at my local specialty chocolate store. To tell the truth I picked it up only because of it’s shape, it is a long stick of chocolate not unlike a Nerd candy rope in width but certainly shorter in length. I wasn’t sold on the 60% cacao because I rather [...]

Amella Passion Fruit Cocoa Butter Caramels September 27, 2010

I found Amella Passion Fruit Cocoa Butter Caramels at my usual local specialty chocolate shop.
