I found Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello at my local grocery store in the Jello pudding section. I recently received a coupon to give these a try and being that I love Jello Chocolate Pudding I wasn’t about to miss out on their newest chocolate Jello creation.

The Chocolate: Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello
Type of Chocolate: Milk chocolate mousse
Cocoa Content:
Unlisted
Best Eaten With:
Fresh berries
Price:
$3.55/6

Chocolate mousse is one of those indulgences that I absolutely adore but am simply too lazy to create myself. The reason for my laziness is this: when the craving for chocolate mousse hits I want it now rather than after the mousse has set in the refrigerator for however long each recipe requires. While there are many perfect chocolate mousse recipes that suit planned events well, when it comes to snacking I prefer my mousse pre-made.

Taste:

The Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello come in their usual size plastic pudding cups, however, these cups are black. While the black cups I assume are meant to convey the darkness of the ‘indulgence’ or perhaps the true richness of the chocolate or maybe even the exclusivity of the mousse…they just don’t do it for me. Black packaging for anything whether it be pudding cups or laundry detergent is a major turn off. Show me what’s inside for goodness sake, particularly when it comes to food products!

When I peeled off the lid of the Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello I did not see the fluffy mousse that I expected. Instead when I peeled off the lid I was greeted with a shiny skin like topping on top of my mousse. This skin was very similar to the shine that develops on top of Birds custard after it has been left sitting out for a period of time although it did not separate from the mousse like custard skin does from custard. The texture of the “skin” was soft and almost rubbery and not particularly tasty at all but underneath this skin was the mousse that I had been expecting all along.

The mousse underneath the questionable shiny top skin is airy and light. Each delicately placed air bubble within the rich chocolate mousse gives it such a wonderfully light texture that even when it is in your mouth the mousse retains it’s soft and feathery consistency. The flavor of the Chocolate Indulgence flavored mousse is no different from the general Jello chocolate pudding so essentially when you pick up the mousse instead of the pudding you are choosing for texture rather than taste. With either pudding or mousse there is still the rich creamy chocolate flavor that you expect from Jello.

The after taste of Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello is again the same aftertaste that I expect from Jello chocolate pudding, milky. The slight hint of chocolate flavor remains but overall there is a feeling of a milky coating throughout my mouth that is certainly not refreshing but not particularly unpleasant either.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello include: Water, xylitol, cream, cocoa (processed with alkali), modified food starch, less than 2% of gelatin, milk protein concentrate, salt, sodium, stearoyl lactylate (for smooth texture), sucralose, acesulfame potassium.

The Bottom Line:

As I mentioned before, I love Jello chocolate pudding and being that this is essentially the same flavor with a different texture I can hardly claim that I dislike Mousse Temptations. I dislike the black pudding cups but the flavor is true Jello chocolate flavor and I would expect nothing less. The texture is fresh, light and airy and I feel that ultimately in picking up this mousse you are buying for this element more than any other. This is certainly not a top quality chocolate but for the price and the texture alone I recommend this for chocolate mousse lovers like me who are just too anxious for their mousse to wait for their homemade recipe to set. If you are at all concerned with artificial ingredients though make sure you steer well clear of this one because it is chock full of them.

Overall Rating:

You can buy Chocolate Indulgence Mousse Temptations by Jello from the dairy section of your local supermarket.

madelaine chocolate bunnyI found the Madelaine Sitting Rabbit in milk chocolate at the local specialty chocolate shop that I usually frequent. With Easter just around the corner I wanted to give this cute milk chocolate bunny a try as well as try my best to look festive for the Easter season! I picked up this solid milk chocolate bunny mostly out of curiosity for the extremely plain packaging – a clear cello bag but also because I had never heard of the Madelaine brand before.

The Chocolate: Madelaine Chocolate Sitting Rabbit
Type of Chocolate: Milk Chocolate
Cocoa Content:
Unlisted
Best Eaten With:
Lightly salted almonds
Price:
$2.25

I remember as a child that Easter was always a very fun occasion. In England we have a tradition of gifting children with insanely over sized hollow chocolate Easter eggs which usually carry some sort of candy inside them. Needless to say when Easter rolls around now the child in me still surveys the chocolate confections with awe. When I spotted the Madelaine chocolate sitting rabbit in the plain clear cello bag I was drawn in and had to share it with you all.

Taste:

The Madelaine chocolate sitting rabbit does not particularly impress with it’s packaging but the word “solid” on the bag certainly stands out among other hollow Easter candies. Turning the bag over to note the serving size of this 2.5 oz bunny I saw that the entire bunny stood at a whopping 440 calories, although it is noted that this constitutes two separate servings…we all know how that goes.

Upon opening the simple packaging the smell of milk chocolate pervades, it is a sugary sweet chocolate that causes memories of a childhood to flood back. As my mouth begins to water it is simply impossible to resist biting the ears off this milk chocolate bunny. The thick solid chocolate is certainly creamy and sweet but in my opinion it is a little too sweet. The chocolate was too thick to melt in my mouth and each bite became more dense as I moved down to the rabbit’s body. I realized at this point that the initial sweetness that seemed so tempting was perhaps a little too sweet. A sticky sweet saliva began to coat my mouth and although the sweetness of the chocolate may have been tempting there is serious consideration as to whether another bite is a wise idea. Eating more of the chocolate brings the distinct sensation of eating cheap chocolate rather than quality chocolate due to the lack of a smooth subtly sweet taste experience. The chocolate texture is not waxy by any means but it possesses a thickness that coats your teeth and tongue with an artificial flavor which is just too sweet for any experienced chocolate lover. There is no resemblance of cacao in this particular chocolate, only a refined sugar taste with artificial flavoring.

The after taste of this chocolate is far too sickly sweet and you will find yourself searching for something salty, or at the very least a glass of cold milk to wash down the rather bland yet over sweetened chocolate.

Ingredients:

The ingredients in the Madelaine chocolate sitting rabbit include: Milk chocolate ( sugar, milk, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, soy lecithin, vanillin – an artificial flavor.)

The Bottom Line:

Nostalgically reminiscent of childhood there exists a temptation to finish the entire rabbit in one sitting. However, the artificial sweetness that insists on coating the mouth and creating a sticky goo out of what was once saliva is enough to convince me that perhaps there are better choices for Easter chocolate out there.

Overall Rating: two and a half pods

You can buy Madelaine products from Amazon.com here.

Dolfin Dark Chocolate with Pink Peppercorns from Brazil February 18, 2010

I found Dolfin Dark Chocolate with Pink Peppercorns from Brazil at a local specialty chocolate store. I have to admit that I hesitated when I picked this bar up because while I adore chocolate I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of peppercorns. That said, I thought that in the interest of [...]

Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa Intense Dark Chocolate Review February 11, 2010

I originally picked up the Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa Intense Dark Chocolate as an attempt to alleviate migraine pain because to be quite honest prior to hearing that dark chocolate helped migraines I would NEVER have dreamed to try a 70% cocoa chocolate before. I don’t do bitter, I can’t stand the shocking acidity of [...]

Green & Black’s Maya Gold Review

Green & Black's Maya Gold Organic Chocolate February 8, 2010

Having become a fan of dark chocolate only recently I am still in the discover and explore phase of revealing the magic that dark chocolate truly holds. While I admit that I had the notion that dark chocolate was always incredibly bitter and certainly far too “over caffeinated” for me, I was pushed in to [...]
