This week in chocolate news the world has of course been a-buzz with preparations for Valentines day (happy Valentines everyone,) but it has also been highlighted with some amazing health discoveries as well.
This week at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology a study was presented that highlighted individuals who consume one serving of chocolate a week as having a 22% decreased risk of having a stroke. It was also indicated that those who already suffer from heart disease, heart attack and stroke have a higher chance at surviving their conditions when they consumed chocolate once a week. Is was noted, however, that chocolate consumption does not reduce the chance of death as a result of a stroke. Joseph Broderick, head of neurology at the University of Cincinnati warns not to take this connection to heart prior to further studies which are able to replicate the findings.
This week also saw the findings of the Angiogenesis Foundation come to light in which they find that incorporating certain foods in to the diet, including dark chocolate and red wine, helps to fight cancer. The Foundation cites a Harvard Medical School study which found that men who ate cooked tomatoes (also on the list of cancer fighting foods) had a 30-50% lower risk of prostate cancer. These foods fight cancer by cutting off blood supply to cancerous tumors. This is a big step in the way of helping us to ward off diseases like cancer by implementing dietary changes.
This week’s findings certainly push for the incorporation of chocolate in to a healthy lifestyle to promote well being, but that said did we really need a push to incorporate chocolate in to our lives? I know I didn’t!
